More Than Just Playing Cards - Level Up Your MTB Skills

The number cards in the GRIT MTB Playing Cards decks feature a careful selection of progressively difficult MTB skills and tricks. We've taken this a step further and developed a printable MTB Skill Tree. Learn how you can level up your MTB skills below.

Why are MTB Tricks on the Number Cards?

The idea for the tricks on the number cards comes from a popular type of card game known as a “Trick-Taking Game.” If you've played Hearts, Spades, Bridge, Euchre, Whist, Pitch, or similar games, you may be familiar with the idea -  Higher number cards beat lower number cards, and the person playing the highest value card wins the trick.

Using the number cards to represent mountain bike skill progression adds another layer of fun.

36 Unique Skills

Each of the 36 number cards shows a different MTB skill or trick.

Increasing Difficulty

Tricks are generally ordered from beginner (2-3) through intermediate (4-8) to advanced (9-10).

All the Skills?

This table shows all of the skills and tricks represented in our GRIT deck. There are certainly more MTB skills than this (especially more advanced ones), but this is a fairly comprehensive set of skills learned by most intermediate to advanced riders.

MTB Skill Map

Before creating the MTB Skill Tree, we spent hours and hours watching youtube videos, reading articles, contacting other bikers, and brainstorming to try to map out how skills help unlock other skills. We used a tool known as a "mind map"  to help with this, and you can view it using OrgPad.

We presented this idea for an MTB skill tree on Reddit to get initial feedback. We found some spelling errors, filled in some missing tricks, renamed some, and categorized and recategorized, ultimately coming up with the MTB Skill Tree presented below.

Skill Dependencies

The connections between skills helped us define progression, identify categories, and organize thoughts.

Still Growing

This skill map can still be updated and lists more skills than in our Skill Tree or the GRIT deck.

Level Up Your MTB Skills

MTB Skill Tree

Mountain biking is a sport that can be enjoyed at every level from beginner to advanced. It's also about progression. Learning to control the bike, reading the trail, managing speed, and moving your body effectively opens the door to increasingly difficult terrain, skills, and tricks.

How to Use the MTB Skill Tree

We created the MTB Skill Tree as a visual way to explore MTB skill progression — from core concepts such as vision, body position, braking, and gearing to advanced skills such as nose pivots, manuals, scrubs, hip jumps, and rear-wheel hops. Remember that a certain amount of athleticism is a requirement to perform (and/or recover from) many of these skills.

This isn't meant to be a specific training program. Riders learn different skills in different orders. Disciplines such as XC, enduro, downhill, dirt jumping, and trials emphasize different abilities. Instead, the tree shows general progression and relationships between skills: what tends to come first, what builds upon earlier bike control, and how skills in one area can unlock skills somewhere else.

A Bit Different Than the Cards

When designing the cards, we were categorizing the skills a bit differently, so the columns of the MTB Skill Tree don't match up perfectly with the 4 suits in the GRIT deck.

🟢🟦 ◆ Trail Classifications

The MTB Skill Tree roughly shows which skills tend to be learned as a Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced rider. These roughly correlate to the  🟢 green circle / 🟦 blue square /  ◆  black diamond trail classification. However, not all trails are rated or graded the same way, so know your abilities and limitations and always ride within your ability.
